Are Husky Safaris Ethical? Here's How We Work

We know many travellers worry about husky welfare before booking. Here's what you'll actually find when you visit us.

Are Huskies Happy?

The Answer Is Easy to See.

  • 45 dogs - a small kennel, not a factory

Lapland Wild Witch has 45 Alaskan and Siberian huskies. Every dog is known by name. This is nothing like the large commercial operations with hundreds of dogs.

  • Rest days, massages, individual nutrition

Each dog has planned rest days between runs. Dogs receive regular massages and individually tailored nutrition. Vet care is routine, not reactive.

  • Maximum 8 adults per safari

We intentionally cap group size - fewer guests mean less pressure on the dogs and a more personal experience for you.

  • The owners live alongside the dogs

Mari started Lapland Wild Witch in 2021. She lives at the kennel, not an employee managing a business, but a musher who built her life around these animals.

  • How do you know the dogs are happy?

Excited barking before a safari. Bright eyes. Strong appetite. Clean kennels. Space to run, play, and simply be dogs. You can see it the moment you arrive.

Lapland Wild Witch Kennel

A Day at the Kennel. What to Expect

The kennel is in Tepasto, about 30 minutes from Levi centre - a quiet Lappish village where the silence is broken only by howling huskies excited to run.

"The dogs know when it's a run day. They start howling before we even get the harnesses out. That's how you know they love what they do."

- Mari, kennel owner, Lapland Wild Witch

After your ride, you'll have time in the free-run area - a fenced space where the dogs are off-leash and genuinely delighted to meet visitors. You'll also walk through the kennel, hear the dogs' names and backstories, and if you're lucky, meet a litter of puppies.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What to expect on a husky safari?

On a husky safari, you'll begin with a brief training session where guides will teach you the basics of handling the sled and working with the dogs.

Once you're ready, you'll set off on a journey through beautiful snowy landscapes. The route typically includes a mix of forested trails and open areas over frozen lakes, providing a variety of scenic views.

During the ride, you'll have the opportunity to take breaks, allowing you to take photos and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. On a track 10 km or more, mushers can swap.

After the ride, you'll often have a chance to warm up with hot drinks and snacks, meet, cuddle and pet the huskies.

  • What is the duration of husky safari?

The duration can vary, so check the specific details for your booking.

5 km ride usually takes 20 min.

10 km ride is about 30 min of driving.

Keep in mind that safaris include transfer, dogs introduction, time after riding to enjoy warm drinks and interactions with dogs. So the whole experience takes 2-3h.

  • What are the husky safari prices in Levi?

Husky ride prices in Levi vary based on the duration and type of the tour. Here are some examples:

Husky Park visit and 2 km musher-driven ride

Price: from €135 per adult with transfer.

      Short Husky Safari (5 km)

Price: Approximately €159-179 per adult for a 5 km ride.

      Medium-Length Husky Safari (10 km)

Price: Around €225-250 per adult for a 10 km ride.

These prices often include transportation, guidance, and sometimes refreshments. Booking in advance is recommended due to high demand.

  • How many people can seat in a husky sled?

The sled can accommodate up to two adults or one adult and two children or 2 adults and 1 small child. One person is seated while the other stands and guides the sled under the supervision of experienced guide.

Seating is organized to ensure safety and comfort, with the seated passenger wrapped in warm blankets to protect against the cold. The standing person will be given instructions on how to help steer and control the sled.

For each safari, we usually have a small group of 4 to 5 sleds, ensuring a personalized and intimate experience. This allows for ample interaction with the guides and the huskies, as well as maintaining a smooth and enjoyable pace throughout the journey.

Each husky sled is typically pulled by a team of 4 to 6 energetic and well-trained dogs.

  • What should I wear for a husky safari?

Dress warmly in multiple layers. We recommend thermal underwear, a fleece or wool layer, waterproof outerwear, insulated boots, a hat, gloves, and a neck warmer. We also provide thermal clothing if needed for an extra fee.

For windy weather, we also recommend wearing ski goggles or eye protection, as snowflakes can get into your eyes during blizzards or while moving at high speeds, which can be quite uncomfortable.

  • Are the huskies friendly?

Yes! Our huskies are well-trained, social, and love meeting new people. They're working dogs, so always listen to our guide’s instructions when approaching or petting them.

  • Do I need to book husky safari in advance?

Yes, advance booking is highly recommended — especially during peak season (December–March). Tours often sell out quickly.

  • Is transportation included?

Yes! We provide pick-up and drop-off from central Levi. The exact time and location will be confirmed upon booking.

  • Do I need experience to drive the sled?

Not at all! We provide full safety instructions and sled training before your tour. It’s easy to learn, and our guides are there to support you.

  • Can two people share a sled?

Yes. One person drives while the other sits in the sled. You can switch halfway through so both get a chance to mush.

  • Can I visit the kennel without going on a sled ride?

Yes! Our Husky kennel visit program in Levi is perfect for those who want to meet the huskies and learn about life at the kennel without riding.

  • Will I see puppies?

Depending on the season, you may get to meet husky puppies! We can’t guarantee it, but it’s always a highlight when they’re around.

  • How many dogs in the team?

Teams typically range from 4 to 6 dogs, personally matched by guides, and they do recognize their names and work as cohesive teams.

  • Are husky safaris in Levi ethical? How are the dogs treated?

We work with Lapland Wild Witch, a small family kennel with 45 dogs run by Mari and Kari-Matti. Every dog has scheduled rest days, receives regular massages and individual nutrition plans, and gets routine veterinary care. We cap safari groups at 8 people so no dog is overworked. The kennel owners live alongside their dogs year-round, this is not a commercial operation managed by staff rotations. You can see inside the kennel in our video above.
