Most people know that you can survive inside a snow igloo even in extreme cold. Very few have actually built one. This program gives you that experience.

The Program: Arctic Survival Skills in Practice

The guide introduces the basics of snow shelter construction, using the quinzhee method: pile the snow, compact it, let it settle, then hollow it out from the inside. It is simpler than stacking snow blocks and just as effective. When it is -20°C (-4°F) outside, the interior of a properly built snow shelter stays just above freezing. Then the practical work begins.

The building site is in Lappish nature, on the riverbank or on a frozen lake. The group works together through each stage: piling and compacting a large mound of snow, digging the entrance tunnel, crawling inside to hollow out the interior, and smoothing the walls and ceiling with a snow saw until the structure is stable and there is enough space to sit comfortably. It is real physical work, sustained effort in genuine Arctic cold.

At the end, the guide lights the outdoor fire. Warm drinks and snacks are served. Some of the igloos built on this program are included in the Snow Igloo Park at Polarman’s Camp, a structure that thousands of visitors will walk past. The builders’ names and home country can be marked on a sign next to the igloo.

Snowmobile safari ending at igloo building site.

The tour starts with a pickup from your accommodation and transfer to our safari house. There, you’ll gear up with thermal equipment: a snowmobile suit, boots, mittens, helmet, balaclava, and woolen socks, all designed to keep you warm and dry.

Your guide will provide a safety briefing and driving instructions, and then you’re ready to hit the trail.

This snowmobile safari takes us through snow covered forests and lakes.

A unique feature of this tour is that a part of the route runs through privately owned land, ensuring a fully private and uninterrupted experience. These exclusive trails are reserved for our groups only — no other snowmobiles or vehicles are allowed, giving you a true sense of Arctic isolation and serenity. The ride will take approximately 1,5-2 hours, and we will arrive to our unique spot and continue with Build Your Own Snow Igloo program. After the program you will be transported to your accommodation with a car.
