Electric Fatbike Tours in Levi, Lapland
Ride through snow-covered frozen forest, across fell terrain, and into the darkness hunting the northern lights on a Finnish-made electric fatbike built for exactly this.
Why e-fatbike in Lapland
The only way to cover this much ground in a Lapland winter
Snowmobiles are loud and need a driving licence. Snowshoes are slow. Cross-country skiing takes practice. An electric fatbike sits in a gap none of the others fill: you move quickly and quietly through wilderness terrain, cover real distance, and the electric motor handles the hills, leaving your attention for the landscape rather than the effort.
The 4.8-inch fat tyres were specifically designed for riding on snow and ice. They grip frozen trails the way normal bike tyres never could, making the experience genuinely accessible to people who haven't cycled seriously in years. The further you get from the resort, the more the forest changes, narrower trails, older trees, the occasional reindeer track crossing your path.
Silent in the forest
Unlike snowmobiles, e-fatbikes make almost no noise. You ride through the taiga, hearing only snow under the tyres and wind in the spruce. Wildlife doesn't bolt at your approach.
Access to fell terrain
Our routes reach the Kätkätunturi fell slopes and open viewpoints that most Levi visitors never see. The trails cross marshland, boreal forest, and lakeside terrain in a single ride.
The motor does the work
Electric assist takes the effort out of hills and longer distances. You control how much help you want, ride actively or cruise. Either way, the landscape is the point, not the workout.
Under the Arctic sky
In the dark months, the night tour turns the aurora hunt into something active. Instead of standing in a car park watching the sky, you're moving through dark forest with the lights appearing above the treeline.

The bike
Helkama FE12 - Finnish-made for Arctic conditions
We use the Helkama FE12, designed and built in Finland specifically for Nordic terrain. This isn't a repurposed city e-bike - it's a machine built for exactly the conditions you'll be riding in.
Helkama FE12 Electric Fatbike
- 12-speed · Hydraulic disc brakes · Suspension fork
- Battery: 708 Wh
- Range: Up to 100 km
- Tyre width: 4.8 inches
- Bike weight: ~26 kg
- Brakes: Hydraulic disc
- Sizes available: S / M / L
A note on battery performance in winter: lithium batteries lose some capacity in cold temperatures - typically 10-20% at -10°C to -15°C. The 708Wh battery on the FE12 is oversized precisely to compensate for this. On our standard guided tours (15-25 km), range is never a concern.
The 4.8-inch fat tyres provide the grip that makes winter riding feel intuitive rather than precarious. At low pressure, they conform to snow and ice the way a normal tyre never could, the bike floats rather than digs in.
Minimum rider height: 150 cm. Maximum weight: 110 kg. Three frame sizes cover riders from 150–195 cm.
Signature programme
Most northern lights tours in Levi mean sitting in a heated car or standing in a field waiting. The
Night E-Fatbike Tour is different: you're moving through dark forest on a machine that makes almost no sound, the headlamp illuminating the trail ahead, and the sky visible whenever the tree cover opens.

Night E-Fatbike Tour with Campfire - how it works
Departure is timed for the darkest part of the evening when aurora activity peaks. The route takes you away from resort light pollution into mature taiga where the sky is wide. Your guide picks the route based on cloud cover and aurora forecast that evening. The tour ends at a fire in the wilderness, warming up before the ride back. Whether or not the lights appear, riding through a silent Arctic forest after dark is worth the evening.
Duration: 3-4 hours

Combo experience
Two of our most distinctive programmes - e-fatbike and Reindeer Herder's Day - work together as a natural half-day route. You ride out through the forest to reach the herding area; the journey itself becomes part of the experience rather than a transfer.
Ride by e-fatbike to a private reindeer area, spend time with a Sámi herder on working herding land, and have lunch in a wilderness cabin.
This isn't a tourist farm, it's genuine reindeer herding terrain that most visitors never reach.
From €295
Ride out to search for the reindeer herd in their winter range - the herd moves, so the route changes each time. Lunch in a wilderness hut is included.
A looser, more exploratory programme than the Herder's Day combo.
From €220
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be very fit to join an e-fatbike tour?
No! Our electric fatbikes provide pedal assist, making it easy to ride even on hills or snow. The tours are designed for all levels of fitness, and our guides adjust the pace to the group.
What is the minimum height or age to join e-fatbike tour?
The minimum height is 150 cm. We have three bike sizes:
- S size (150–170 cm)
- M size (160–180 cm)
- L size (175–195 cm)
Each bike weighs around 26 kg.

- Gloves, hat, and neck warmer
- Insulated boots
- Water bottle
In summer/autumn:
- Sturdy hiking shoes
- Wind- and water-proof jacket
- Long pants
- Insect repellent

What kind of bikes are used?
We use Helkama FE12 e-fatbikes, specially designed for Nordic conditions.
Key features include:
- 708Wh battery (up to 100 km range)
- 4.8" fat tires for snow, gravel, and mud
- Suspension and hydraulic disc brakes
Is this safe in winter conditions?
Yes. Our bikes are equipped for winter riding, and your guide will choose the safest, most scenic route based on the weather and group ability. You’ll also be provided with proper equipment like helmets and headlamps.
What happens in bad weather?
Tours run in most conditions - it’s part of the adventure! In severe weather (e.g., heavy storms), we may reschedule or offer alternatives for your safety.
Are the trails difficult?
We offer a variety of trails, from easy forest paths to more challenging fell terrain. Your guide will match the route to the group’s experience and fitness.
What makes riding a fatbike in winter different from a normal bike tour?
The 4.8-inch fat tyres are designed specifically for snow and ice. At low pressure, they spread across the surface rather than cutting through it. This creates traction on terrain where a regular tyre would slide or sink. The experience of riding on a well-packed snowy trail is genuinely smooth, not rough or unstable, as people often expect. Add electric assist, and the result is that almost anyone can ride through Arctic forest in winter without prior off-road experience.
Does the battery work properly in -15°C?
Lithium batteries do lose some capacity in cold weather, typically around 10-20% at very low temperatures. The Helkama FE12 has a 708Wh battery, which is significantly larger than most e-bikes, partly to compensate for this. On our guided tours (15-25 km routes), battery range is never a limiting factor regardless of temperature. Your guide also monitors battery levels throughout the ride.
Can I see the northern lights on the night e-fatbike tour?
It's possible and it happens, but no aurora sighting is ever guaranteed, as it depends on solar activity and cloud cover on the night. What the tour does guarantee is a route away from resort light pollution and a guide who monitors the aurora forecast and adjusts the route in real time. On clear nights, the probability is meaningfully higher than standing in the village. The ride itself through dark forest is worth the evening regardless.
What routes do the tours use? Are they the public trails?
Our routes use a combination of public winter biking trails and private trails. Levi has around 20 km of maintained public winter biking tracks, including routes toward Kätkätunturi fell and Lake Immeljärvi. Our guided tours also access private wilderness terrain that's not on the public trail map, including the reindeer herding land on the combo programmes. This is one of the things a guided tour gives you that self-guided rental doesn't.
Are private e-fatbike tours available?
Yes. All four programmes can be run as private tours for couples, families, or groups. Private tours allow flexibility on departure time and pace, and the guide can adapt the route to your group. Contact us via WhatsApp or email for private pricing, it varies by group size and programme.
