Combo Experiences

Combine reindeer with another activity

Some of our best programmes were born by accident: guests who asked "can we do both?" The answer was yes, and the combination turned out better than either activity alone. A snowmobile ride through the wilderness that ends at a reindeer corral hits differently than two separate trips.

Snowshoe hike to the Secret Reindeer Forest - afternoon Herder’s Day with our kota chef’s legendary soup kota hut lunch, warm clothing included.

About reindeer in Lapland

Sámi Culture & Reindeer Herding

Reindeer herding is not a tourist invention - it is the oldest continuous livelihood of the Sámi people, the only recognised indigenous group in the European Union. In Finnish Lapland, semi-wild reindeer outnumber humans. They are counted, not owned in the conventional sense; they roam free for most of the year, returning to herders in autumn and winter.

"You don't own a reindeer. You are responsible for it."  - Sámi proverb

Our guides and partner herders come from families that have practised this tradition for generations. During every programme, whether a 1 km sleigh ride or a full day in the wilderness, you'll hear stories of migration routes, seasonal cycles, and the deep cultural bond between people and animals that technology has never managed to replace.

Reindeer programmes in Levi run from early December to the first week of April. Outside this window, the animals are free in the forest and not accessible for visits.

  • What’s the difference between a reindeer farm visit and a reindeer sleigh ride?

A sleigh ride means you sit in a sled pulled by a reindeer along a marked trail (1 km or 3 km).

Including the introduction, guiding and storytelling, and hot drinks, the entire excursion typically lasts 2 to 2.5 hours.

  • Are reindeer rides safe for children?

Yes. Reindeer move at a walking pace and the sleds are stable. There is no minimum age for sleigh rides. Children sit with a parent in the sled.

For the farm visit programmes, children from around 7 years old participate comfortably - the snowmobile sled transfer is smooth and the experience is calm.

Here are some points to consider for the comfort:

Age Recommendations: Some providers may have age recommendations or offer special short rides specifically designed for younger children.

Parental Supervision: Children should be accompanied by an adult in a sled to ensure their comfort and safety during the ride.

Warm Clothing: Ensure that children are dressed warmly in layers, including hats, gloves, and thermal clothing, to protect them from the cold.

Ride Duration: Shorter rides (1 km or around 20 minutes) are more suitable for smaller children to prevent discomfort.
